Michael McGruder

Hi, I’m Michael.
I am currently a student at the University of Houston studying to earn my graduate degree in social work and eventually become a licensed clinical social worker. I have a few years of experience serving in various roles to assist diverse populations, from college students to incarcerated women.

My motivations to pursue my career extend from my grandmother and the values she has taught me from a young age, such as to help others when they need it, we are all created equal, and be yourself while having fun. My grandma is definitely a big part of my life. She owned a women’s bar and was a major advocate for the LGBTQ+ community in Oklahoma City. Additionally, as a bisexual male, I want to be a leader and essentially follow in my grandma’s footsteps by being an advocate and spreading the unique knowledge of LGBTQ+ history and bring a sense of belonging and inclusion into the community. I’d like to take my philosophy of “teamwork makes the dream work” and my learned skills thus far into a community and space that is very personal to me.
